Plant Nutrition and Health

Application of Space For Food & Agriculture

Description

Wherever plants are grown, they need nutrients to keep them healthy. Those nutrients can come from the soil or other growth medium and/or they can be added to the environment to ensure optimal plant nutrition which leads to better crop yield. When we look at plant nutrition and health, we are not only looking at the plant’s nutrient uptake, but also at creating an optimal environment for plant growth – fewer pests and invasive, undesired plants, disease treatments for example. Much of the research and manufacturing around plant nutrition and health is focused on creating hearty and healthy plants that can feed the growing world population.

Value Impact

Increasing crop yield, improving plant health through more environmentally conscious methods, and improvements in vertical agriculture.

Seed TAM

    Why Space

The lack of sedimentation and convection in microgravity allow for larger more regularly shaped crystals with fewer defects to form
Microgravity changes the behaviour of microbes, in some cases making them more active, and could help us find microbes that are more beneficial to plant and soil health
Using microgravity to find ways to treat diseases, which could be worse in microgravity than terrestrially, will help prevent the spread of dangerous plant diseases
