Cultured Meats/ Plant Based Meats

Application of Space For Food & Agriculture

Description

Cultured meat holds the promise of being an alternative to the conventional meat supply chain. Activity in this area of cellular agriculture is still nascent. Currently, the only commercially available cultured meat product is chicken bites served at a single restaurant in Singapore and made by Eat Just, a company that received regulatory approval for the sale of their chicken bites in December 2020. Much of the R&D and manufacturing of cultured meat revolves around being able to scale production and keep the cultured meat affordable

Value Impact

Increase food production, decrease in greenhouse gases, decrease land use for animal farming, and creating a new type of food.

Seed TAM

Global cultured meat market is ~ 100M€ all of which is R&D

Subtopics

Production Method – 3D Bioprinting
Production Method – Bioreactors

Why Space

Microgravity can help us understand the movement of fluids when surface tension is the dominate force
Due to changes in the behaviour of microbes in microgravity, ensuring water safety is even more important and challenging. Finding ways to remediate harmful microbes and biofilms in microgravity will lead to better treatments terrestrially
